What is a RCVS Specialist?

All veterinary surgeons undertake a broad based training for 5 – 6 years at Veterinary School before they qualify as a general practitioner. Recognised specialist veterinary surgeons undertake further extensive, additional training for 3 – 4 years in their chosen speciality to become a Recognised Specialist. These vets are the equivalent of Consultants in human medicine. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) only allows veterinary surgeons with these further qualifications to call themselves specialists. In addition to these post graduate qualifications RCVS specialists have to prove they are active within their field and up to date with the most recent knowledge.

They also have to re-accredit every 5 years to prove to the RCVS that they are still working to the required standard. Depending on where Specialists train they can be RCVS, European or American Specialists and some consultants have dual qualifications. It is because of the extensive training and re-accreditation that Specialists undergo that they have a much greater depth of knowledge and experience in their particular speciality than primary care vets in general practice. They have experience in diagnosing and managing difficult and rare cases and are ideally placed to help you make your pet more comfortable.
